National Heart Month: Simple Steps to Keep Your Heart Healthy
Every February, the UK marks National Heart Month, a nationwide awareness campaign led by the British Heart Foundation to highlight the importance of cardiovascular health. Heart and circulatory diseases affect around 7.6 million people across the country, making prevention, early detection, and healthy lifestyle choices more important than ever.
At 247 Aviation, we recently supported this initiative by encouraging staff to prioritise their wellbeing. Our flight nurse, Christopher Rocks, visited head office to measure blood pressure and provide guidance on maintaining a healthy heart. Regular checks like these can help identify risks early and empower people to make positive changes.
Tips for Keeping Your Heart Healthy
1. Stay active
Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise each week. Activities such as brisk walking, cycling, or swimming help strengthen the heart and improve circulation.
2. Eat a balanced diet
Focus on whole foods, including fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats. Reducing salt, sugar, and processed foods can help manage blood pressure and cholesterol.
3. Maintain a healthy weight
Carrying excess weight increases strain on the heart. Even small, gradual weight loss can significantly reduce risk.
4. Quit smoking
Smoking damages blood vessels and increases the likelihood of heart disease. Stopping smoking is one of the most powerful steps you can take for your heart.
5. Manage stress and sleep well
Chronic stress and poor sleep can negatively impact heart health. Prioritising relaxation, mindfulness, and consistent sleep routines can make a meaningful difference.
